What it builds

Volume and capacity — how many small cups fill the big one is a real maths question when you are three. Also floating and sinking, flow, and the beginnings of measurement. Standing play at a table is better for core strength than sitting, and pouring is precise, two-handed motor work.

Ages

From 2 years with supervision. Best between 2 and 6.

Safety and materials

Always supervise children around water. Empty the table completely after every session — a small child can drown in very little water. Non-toxic materials with smooth edges.

Looking after it

Rinse and dry after use. Empty and store the lid on to keep the sand clean and the neighbourhood cats out.
