A marble run is a physics experiment a three-year-old can run forty times in an afternoon. Make the slope steeper and the marble goes faster. Add a turn and it slows. Take a piece out and the whole thing fails — which is the most useful lesson in the box.

Sixty solid wooden pieces, no instructions required. The tower your child builds on day one will look nothing like the one they build in a month.

What it builds

Cause and effect, in the most direct form a child will ever meet it. Also sequencing and planning — you cannot build a working run without thinking two pieces ahead. Spatial reasoning gets a serious workout, and it is one of the strongest early predictors of later ability in maths and science.

Ages

From 3 years with an adult building alongside. From 5 most children design their own runs and start deliberately making them harder.

Safety and materials

Solid wood, smooth sanded edges, non-toxic finishes. Contains small parts and marbles — not suitable for children under 3. Follow the age warning on the box.

Looking after it

Wipe with a damp cloth. Keep the marbles together in a bag. Leaving a finished run standing overnight makes it far more likely to be played with again tomorrow.
