Water that goes somewhere

Most water tables are a tub on legs. This one has three levels: pour water in at the top and it runs down through spinners and rainfall curtains, past an octopus, a whale and a turtle, into the pool at the bottom. Then a child scoops it up and does it again.

That loop — fill, pour, watch, repeat — is the most reliably absorbing thing you can give a two-year-old outdoors.

What it builds

Cause and effect at its most immediate, plus flow, volume and capacity — how many scoops fill the top before it overflows is a real question when you are three. Pouring accurately is precise two-handed work, and standing to play is better for core strength than sitting.

Ages

From 2 years with supervision. Best between 2 and 6.

Safety and materials

Always supervise children around water, and empty the table completely after every session — a small child can drown in a very shallow amount. Non-toxic plastic with smooth edges. Contains small parts — not suitable for children under 3 unless closely supervised. Follow the age warning on the box.

Looking after it

Rinse and drain after use and let it dry. Store out of direct sun, which fades and embrittles plastic over a South African summer.
