What it builds

Service role play, which is unusually good for social skills: someone has to be the customer, and that means asking, listening and waiting. It also rehearses a haircut, which for a lot of small children is a genuinely fraught event.

Plenty of fine motor work in the combing, snipping and arranging — and a surprising amount of tidying, since the shop has to be reset between customers.

From 3 years, best between 3 and 7.

Safety and materials

Non-toxic plastic, smooth edges, no working blades — the scissors and razor are solid mouldings. Contains small parts — not suitable for children under 3. Follow the age warning on the box.

Looking after it

Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap. Everything has a place on the shelves, which helps.
